Summary

A fresh, funny and accessible retelling of Jane Austen's best-known story, with witty black and white illustrations throughout。

Elizabeth Bennet is the second eldest in a family of five daughters。 Although their mother is very keen to see them all married to wealthy men, Elizabeth is determined that she will only ever marry for love。

At a ball, Elizabeth meets Mr Darcy, who at first she believes is proud and haughty。

But perhaps there is more to him than first meets the eye。。。

Katherine Woodfine is best known for her historical series, The Sinclair Mysteries, which includes The Clockwork Sparrow。 A huge fan of Jane Austen from a young age, she's perfectly placed to bring the Bennet sisters to a new audience。

Eglantine Ceulemans captures all of Austen's satire and wit, bringing her colourful casts to life with warm and funny black and white illustrations。

Illustrated and retold editions are also available for: Emma, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey。 The perfect way to discover Austen for the first time, this bright and bold collection features some of the most inspiring and famous heroines in English literature。 For readers aged eight and up。

This was a lot of fun to read!! Essentially it is a 'retelling' that embeds lots of the quotes within! The illustrations were very cute, I did expect a few more though! Like Sense and Sensibility I feel that the characters in Pride and Prejudice also lost a little in translation。 That’s not to say this wasn’t an incredibly enjoyable read, the plot was well adapted and Lizzy herself was excellent。 It was just the supporting characters who, from the completely necessary need to leave out chunks of dialogue to make it more accessible, lost a little of their depth。Nonetheless this was a lovely, accessible adaptation Austen’s much beloved work。

From September 2019 to October 2020, we were treated to a series of splendid illustrated books, drawn by Églantine Ceulemans, collectively entitled “Awesomely Austen – Illustrated and Retold。” The series features all of Austen’s completed novels, repackaged as enjoyable children’s books, seeking to introduce the delights of Jane Austen to a younger generation while also entertaining long-time fans。Since these books are aimed primarily at children and young adults, Jane Austen’s most memorable qu From September 2019 to October 2020, we were treated to a series of splendid illustrated books, drawn by Églantine Ceulemans, collectively entitled “Awesomely Austen – Illustrated and Retold。” The series features all of Austen’s completed novels, repackaged as enjoyable children’s books, seeking to introduce the delights of Jane Austen to a younger generation while also entertaining long-time fans。Since these books are aimed primarily at children and young adults, Jane Austen’s most memorable quotes are understandably absent。 Written in Regency-era “British” English, Austen’s original prose may be difficult for younger readers to fully appreciate。As such, long-time fans should not expect to read such iconic and deliciously witty statements as Pride and Prejudice's “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife" or Emma's “Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her。”In their place are wonderful retellings done in a language more accessible to their target audience, accompanied by Ms。 Ceuleman’s charmingly quirky illustrations。These children’s books retain the spirit of Austen’s wicked wit, insightful social commentary, and ahead-of-its-time focus on strong female protagonists。In this way, the “Awesomely Austen” series provides a wonderful venue for a new generation readers to discover the delights of Jane Austen, ensuring that her legacy will live on for generations to come。 。。。more

Katherine Woodfine did a wonderful job keeping the essence of Jane Austen’s work while making it more accessible to younger readers。 The doodles by Eglantine Ceulemans are truly delightful and help further in making the story more appealing。 As a Jane Austen enthusiast I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any young reader or any older reader who may find the original text too cumbersome。

This was so damn cute。 I wasn't sure if you could condense a story like this and still stay true to its beautiful story telling but this was the fun version with all of the sass。 I just hope young readers don't think love is that easy haha! There is a lot missing from all 3 narratives。 This was so damn cute。 I wasn't sure if you could condense a story like this and still stay true to its beautiful story telling but this was the fun version with all of the sass。 I just hope young readers don't think love is that easy haha! I bought this to read with my niece when she gets older (she's only a baby but I'm a prepared Aunty)。This is a very sweet retelling of Pride and Prejudice and would be the perfect Jane Austen introduction for young readers。 I did feel like the characters were a little flat sometimes but look forward to reading the others in the series I bought this to read with my niece when she gets older (she's only a baby but I'm a prepared Aunty)。This is a very sweet retelling of Pride and Prejudice and would be the perfect Jane Austen introduction for young readers。 I did feel like the characters were a little flat sometimes but look forward to reading the others in the series 。。。more

I have loved the novels of Jane Austen since I was in my teens and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is my favourite, so was delighted to be invited to review this retelling for the Vine programme。I admit to being a little apprehensive about this book and series, though was immediately charmed by the cover art and curious to read it。Essentially Katherine Woodfine has retold Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in accessible language aimed at readers 9-12。 I certainly felt that Woodfine had honoured her sourc I have loved the novels of Jane Austen since I was in my teens and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is my favourite, so was delighted to be invited to review this retelling for the Vine programme。I admit to being a little apprehensive about this book and series, though was immediately charmed by the cover art and curious to read it。Essentially Katherine Woodfine has retold Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in accessible language aimed at readers 9-12。 I certainly felt that Woodfine had honoured her source material。 Throughout the text is accompanied by the sweet, quirky illustrations of Eglantine Ceulemans。 There is also a useful family tree and illustrated character list at the beginning and extra information at the end about Jane Austen and the society she writes about。I loved it and would have no hesitation in recommending it。 The hardback is a handy size with a textured cover。Currently two other volumes are available in the Awesomely Austen series and I am intending to order both and eventually collect all six。 。。。more

Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favourite book, so to say I was excited about this retelling for younger readers, would be an understatement。 Especially since the reteller was Katherine Woodfine, whose Sinclairs Mysteries I really enjoyed, because she created a long-gone era so vividly and wrote spunky, smart female characters。The writing borrows very heavily from Austen's original text, which is a good thing- best give young readers a flavour of the original- but cuts down on the complex sen Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favourite book, so to say I was excited about this retelling for younger readers, would be an understatement。 Especially since the reteller was Katherine Woodfine, whose Sinclairs Mysteries I really enjoyed, because she created a long-gone era so vividly and wrote spunky, smart female characters。The writing borrows very heavily from Austen's original text, which is a good thing- best give young readers a flavour of the original- but cuts down on the complex sentence construction (also a good thing)。 The narrative is swift and pacy, and the characters are true to the originals and likeable too。 I really liked how Woodfine has replaced some of the period terms with modern ones- e。g。 "call on Mr Bingley" with "visit Mr Bingley and make friends", and has reworded some descriptions to give us better insight into the characters - so Mr Bennet 'grins' , 'likes to tease' and 'speaks mischievously'; Mr Darcy 'drawls'; Jane 'sighs dreamily' when she talks about Mr Bingley after the ball when they first meet, and 'never talks meanly about anyone'; and Miss Bingley 'looks cross'。 What I didn't like as much, was that there was no depth to the characters, and no real character development。 I don't remember if the abridged edition I had read at age 11 had it either, and have currently no way of knowing whether 10 year olds who read this book will miss it- but I do feel that the characters have been shortchanged。 Darcy, particularly, suffers the most- he is like a carboard cutout who goes from being stiff and haughty to being stiff but secretly kind。 His character, which had the steepest arc in the original, is completely edited in this one。 Also, while there is a line in the introduction about how society in Regency England was sharply divided by wealth (it still is, so no surprises there) and women were expected to marry young (which is no longer the case, and hence was needed to be explained), there is no further explanation about how marriage was the only option open for women of a certain part of society- they were too genteel to work for money, yet had not enough money to live independently as a single woman。 This should have been touched upon, methinks。 The illustrations are fun and cheerful cartoon-like renditions: all big eyes and pert noses and ready smiles。 A sea difference from the detailed, grown-up black-and-white illustrations in the kiddie edition I'd read, that had ladies with perfect Graecian profiles and elegant gowns, rooms with graceful furniture, and gentlemen that looked like Rodin had made them! Those illustrations gave me a peek (maybe they got the period wrong, I don't know for sure) into how Regency England was, they gave the retelling weight and graivtas。 But perhaps that is just me hanging on to old memories out of sentimental schamltz。 Particularly clever and deft is the usage of a cat on the background- the Bennets seem to have a cat- to underline certain scenes。 In short- a worthy retelling, one that will act as a stepping stone to reading the original。A more detailed review is posted on my children's books review blog: https://m。facebook。com/story。php?stor。。。 。。。more
